Freezing is an effective way to extend the shelf life of seafood, as well as preserve its beneficial properties. However, not everyone knows how to properly defrost the product without spoiling it. Therefore, together with the Fish&More brand, we decided to share with you useful life hacks and detailed instructions for defrosting fish.

Why It Matters: The Chef’s Answer

There is such a rule: the faster the fish is defrosted, the worse the final quality of the product. I do not recommend defrosting fish and seafood in warm water, microwaves, ovens, or at room temperature. This is very tempting but unacceptable for the desired result. When frozen fish is abruptly placed in heat, the tissue structure is disturbed, the fibers soften, and the product becomes loose, flabby, and loses its original shape.

A fish carcass that has been improperly defrosted is much more difficult to fillet. It is very difficult to work with such meat. It is better to plan a fish dish for dinner in advance and defrost the product in advance. How to do it right – read on.

Simple instructions for: How To Defrost Fish?

If you want to get excellent fish after defrosting, follow the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Remove the fish from the freezer, do not remove it from the vacuum packaging.
  2. Take a plate and put the product on it.
  3. Place the fish on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator (temperature – from 0 to 5 ° C) and leave overnight.
  4. If the refrigerator temperature is above 5°C, 6 hours will suffice.

The chef recommends that you start cooking when the fish is still cold. Room temperature can lead to the formation of pathogenic bacteria on the product. Such fish runs the risk of being spoiled. So if you’re defrosting fish longer, keep it in the fridge.

Subtleties of urgent defrosting

It also happens that the fish needs to be cooked urgently. There is one way to defrost food quickly and keep it at its best.

  1. Take a large saucepan, and pour cold water into it.
  2. Without taking the fish out of the vacuum package, lower it into the water. At the time of defrosting at room temperature, the fish should not come into contact with air, therefore it is recommended not to get rid of the packaging immediately.
  3. Wait 30-40 minutes. The product has been successfully defrosted.

If you plan to fry the fish, blot the carcass with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture into it. In this case, the fish will be fried, not stewed, and you will get a crispy crust.
