How To Store Grapes?

Many important nutrients are found in the grape seeds, from which the healthy grape seed oil is pressed. All grapes naturally contain seeds, only through targeted breeding have these disappeared from some varieties. But do have an idea how to store grapes?

Whether dark red or light green – when it comes to wine grapes, a distinction is made between wine grapes and table grapes. While the former is used to make juice or wine, the latter form slightly larger fruits and are intended for consumption.

Since grapes do not ripen, they are harvested when they are ripe or even fully ripe. In this post, you will learn how to properly store fresh table grapes and store them for a long time.

Storing grapes: the most important things in brief

Grapes are best stored in the special vegetable compartment of your refrigerator. There they stay fresh for a week or two. Grapes can be kept at room temperature for about a week if you regularly sort out rotten fruit and make sure that the grapes do not crush each other. Unlike many other fruits with a high water content, grapes freeze without problems and do not become mushy after thawing.

How do grapes keep the longest?

In order to be able to enjoy or store the fruit for a long time, it is advisable to buy the freshest possible fruit. An indication of this is firm, plump grapes and green stalks and stalks.

Another sign of freshness is the shimmering white layer that is typical of grapes and is referred to as the scent film or misty dew. The film is a natural protection against rot, which should only be washed off before eating.

Grapes should not be crushed or damaged. So that they stay fresh for a long time, they should not lie on top of each other in a fruit bowl, but spread out on a flat plate. This prevents pressure points from forming and the grapes from rotting prematurely.

Stored in a shady spot at room temperature, the fruit will keep for about a week. However, the fruit is even better off in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.

Can you store grapes in the fridge?

Unlike many other types of fruit, grapes can be stored in the refrigerator without any problems. In cool temperatures, they even keep much better and stay fresh for one to two weeks.

It is important that you take chilled grapes out of the cooler about a quarter of an hour before you nibble them. This allows them to develop their full aroma properly.

When should you stop eating grapes?

If table grapes have already burst and gotten brown, mushy patches, they are usually no longer good. Such rotten fruits should be plucked and sorted out regularly.

Is it good to freeze grapes?

Grapes are easy and hassle-free to freeze. Unlike other fruits with high water content, they don’t go mushy when thawed. If you want to freeze grapes, you should first wash them and pluck them from the stems.

So that they do not freeze to each other and are easier to remove individually later on, you can first pre-freeze the fruits spread out on a tray or plate and then transfer them to freezer bags or cans.

Tip: Frozen grapes are a wonderful fruity alternative to ice cubes.
