How To Store Scallions

Also called spring onion or spring onion, green onions enhance all types of dishes. In addition to its pleasant lively and refreshing taste, it becomes a wonderful decoration. One drawback – you have to store it properly. Otherwise, spring onions will quickly wilt, rot or dry out. That’s the reason you must know how to store scallions.

How To Store Scallions? – Preparation

Wrinkled or nicked green onions cannot be stored for long. It is therefore important to handle these greens as carefully as possible when harvesting or purchasing. Any bruising causes the juice to escape, causing it to rot and causing brown spots to appear.

Instructions for preparation:

Prune the stems. Remove wrinkled, damaged, or yellowed sheets. Some green onions can be set aside for immediate consumption. Specimens as regular, fresh, and whole as possible will be suitable for storage. If the clusters have heads, it is not necessary to remove them. But it is advisable to peel off the top layer, and cut off the dirty roots.

Onions do not need to be washed. They will keep longer this way. But nothing bad will happen if you wash and dry them. Rinse in a basin of water; running water will damage the leaves.

Store green onion stalks preferably in the refrigerator. Put them in a glass jar or bag, or wrap them in cling film, paper, or aluminum foil. Store in a container with water at room temperature.

In what form to store chives

Unlike lettuce, dill, and celery leaves, onions are easy to grow, even on a windowsill. They are available fresh all year round. Just put the onions in water, soil, or sawdust. But you won’t be able to harvest many this way, so it’s a good idea to stock up.

Storage option differences:

These storage option differences are very much important to know how to store scallions thoroughly.

Fresh:

The maximum storage period is 30 days. The minimum storage time is 2 to 3 hours. Depends on conditions, temperature, packaging;

dried:

Harvested in season. Dry in pieces in the open air or in a special device, put in a container, and store for up to 24 months;

Frozen:

Cut into pieces, place in a bag, container, or jar, and store in the freezer. Or spread on a tray, freeze, and pour over. This method avoids sticking;

Salty:

For 1 kg of greens, you need 250-300 g of salt. Shred the green stems in a jar, put a capron lid, and leave it in the refrigerator.

Where is the best place to keep it?

Green onions wilt quickly in ambient conditions. Simply placed on a table or in a bag, they will fade in 2 or 3 hours. In the open air, it will begin to dry. It can be stored for 1-3 days. To do this, put it in water like a bouquet. The fluid should be changed daily.

A cold room is ideal for storage. In warm winter, in autumn you can take it out to a balcony or loggia. But temperature fluctuations and sunlight reduce the shelf life.

Storage conditions for spring onions

Leaking containers cause condensation. Moisture leads to rot. Uncovered, green onions dry out. For this reason, they are wrapped but leave openings and perforations. Glass jars with capped lids are an exception.

How to keep green onions fresh and juicy for as long as possible in the fridge:

Stored upright in a large glass jar, it is important not to bend or crease them. Put the lid on and store them in the fridge;

In a thick bag, tie them, and make 5-7 perforations;

Wrapped in food-grade aluminum foil;

Wrapped in paper, moisten with spray, and placed in a bag. Cover and do not tie. Periodically sprinkle the paper with water.

Storing chives in the refrigerator

Green onions can keep for a month or more in the refrigerator, or they may wilt on the second day. It depends on the packaging as well as the temperature. The most favorable range is between +1 and +4 degrees. Choose the coldest shelves.

Recommended containers for storage:

  • glass containers;
  • polyethylene;
  • Aluminum;
  • thick paper.
  • Unsuitable containers:
  • plastic containers;
  • wooden boxes, bowls;
  • dishes without lids

Large amounts of green onions are no problem. They are easy to store and any excess can be saved for the future. If there is no free space in the refrigerator, we recommend salting. Jars are perfect for the cold basement, cellar, or balcony.

Another point is to make preparations in good time. If the onion is already wrinkled and has a lot of folds, it is better to eat it immediately, there is no point in storing it.
