Storage has a major impact on the shelf life of sweet potatoes. In the raw state, the so-called sweet potatoes should be processed after two weeks at the latest. This also depends on the quality of the tubers.

Recognize a bad sweet potato

Poor freshness-deprived sweet potatoes are wrinkled and soft. It can also happen that rotten spots form and the sweet potatoes discolor.

In such a state, sweet potatoes are no longer fit for consumption!

Also, how the sweet potatoes were stored over time. After all, heat is not particularly good for the tubers and they start to germinate quickly.

This means that sweet potatoes do not have an as long a shelf life as classic potatoes. However, these are just as insensitive to storage. Nevertheless, the shelf life is shortened if the temperatures are too high.

Cooked sweet potatoes don’t keep very long. However, batatas can remain on a plate in the fridge for about three days.

However, make sure that the tubers are protected from moisture and other foods. Plastic containers are also not suitable for sweet potatoes, as they spoil faster in them.

Where can I store sweet potatoes?

Storage of raw sweet potatoes

It is ideal if you store raw sweet potatoes in the pantry. The cool ambient temperature and the darkness are good for sweet potatoes. It is also important that the room is dry and that there is pleasant air circulation.

Note: To avoid bruising, sweet potatoes should not weigh on each other. Even if the tubers are relatively firm, rotten spots will quickly form as a result.

It is good if you store the tubers spread out. If there is little space, a newspaper is also suitable, with which the tubers are protected from pressure points.

Storage of cooked sweet potatoes

Once cooked, batatas can only be stored in the fridge or freezer. If you don’t freeze the tubers, they’ll only last a few days in the fridge.

Can I Freeze Sweet Potatoes?

Yes, you can freeze sweet potatoes! However, not in the raw state. However, you can store cooked sweet potatoes very well in the freezer. This makes it very easy to extend the shelf life!

Before storing, you should first let the batatas cool down. It is also ideal if you wrap the bulbs in aluminum foil. You can then simply put the tubers in a freezer bag and thaw them if necessary.

How do I recognize fresh sweet potatoes?

Fresh yams are firm and don’t smell particularly strong, but have a pleasant and sometimes slightly earthy (uncleaned) odor. They are free of dark spots and the shell is undamaged.

The bulbs cannot be pressed together with light finger pressure. The inside of the sweet potato is orange and firm. Likewise, there are no brown or even black discolorations.

Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and low in fat. The beta carotene content in particular is high. In addition, sweet potatoes contain plenty of vitamins, including vitamin E in particular.
