How Long Does Cabbage Last? – Fresh

The precise answer to this question depends to a large extent on the storage conditions. To maximize the shelf life of a fresh one, store it in the refrigerator in a plastic bag and wash it only before eating or using it.

In the refrigerator

Stored in the right conditions, fresh cabbage will generally keep for 1 to 2 months in the refrigerator.

In the freezer

Stored in the right conditions, fresh cabbage retains optimum quality for about 10 to 12 months in the freezer but remains suitable for consumption beyond this period.

Can you freeze fresh cabbage?

Yes. Wash it carefully. Cut it into thin slices or separate the leaves. Blanch them (immerse them in boiling water) for 2 minutes then immediately immerse them in ice water. Dehydrate them, put them in an airtight receptacle or freezer pack and freeze them directly.

Spoiled Cabbage

Cabbage that spoils usually becomes soft and discolored. Discard it if it smells or looks unusual.

How Long Does Cabbage Last? – Cooked

To maximize the shelf life of cooked cabbage, refrigerate it in a shallow airtight container or wrap it tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil or plastic wrap.

Stored in good condition, cooked cabbage can be kept for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator.

To further extend the shelf life of cooked cabbage, you can freeze it. Lastly, freeze it in an airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag, or wrap it tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil or cling film.

In the freezer

Stored in the right conditions, cooked cabbage retains optimum quality for about 10 to 12 months in the freezer, but remains suitable for consumption beyond this period.

After being frozen and then thawed

Cooked cabbage that has been thawed in the refrigerator can be stored for an additional 3-4 days in the refrigerator before consumption. Cabbage that has been thawed in the microwave or in cold water should be eaten immediately.

At room temperature

Bacteria grow rapidly at temperatures between 4°C and 60°C. Cooked cabbage should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
