How To Store Your Lettuce

Refreshing and preserving Lettuce is not as easy as you think. It is often thought that it is enough to place the freshly bought lettuce directly in the refrigerator. Error! Thanks to our advice, you will know how to store lettuce to delay the wilting of your salads and thus enjoy them for a long time.

The green salad invites itself on all tables and in all seasons. There are many varieties, each fresher and crunchier than the next. If green salad is the ally of diets and good health, it remains a fragile product. Improperly stored, lettuce leaves can wilt or turn black fairly quickly. There are a few very simple tips for extending the shelf life of a green salad.

Thoroughly clean and dry the lettuce

To preserve a green salad, you must first clean it well and rid it of sand, earth, or small insects that like to lodge between its leaves. Remove the stem and the outer leaves, then pass them under clear cold water. When cutting your lettuce, do not use a knife, otherwise, the metal will have an oxidizing effect on the lettuce leaves.

The best way to delay the wilting of a green salad is to dry it well, as humidity promotes premature spoilage of the salad. For this, it is necessary to strip the lettuce and wash each leaf. Then, wring them out with a wringer to remove all the moisture.

How to store lettuce in a bowl or a glass jar

After having washed the salad well, place the leaves in an airtight box or a salad bowl lined with absorbent paper. Close the box or cover the bowl with cling film and you’re done! Do the same if you’re using a glass jar: line the bottom with a paper towel, then close the lid and put it in the fridge.

How to store lettuce in a cloth

If you want to avoid a major cleaning beforehand, keep the green salad in a damp tea towel in the refrigerator. This is generally a technique used when the green salad is not fully cooked. All you have to do is take the lettuce leaves as you eat them, and rinse them with clear water or dip them in white wine vinegar. Prepared in this way, the salad can be kept for 15 days.

How to store lettuce in a plastic bag

You can also keep the green salad in a plastic bag completely empty of air. Add a sheet of absorbent paper inside to absorb the remaining moisture. Then poke small holes to let the air circulate and put the bags in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator.

Using Vinegar to Preserve a Green Salad

Another method of preserving green salad: is white vinegar. All you have to do is soak your salad leaves in a bowl of cold water and white vinegar. Wait about ten minutes, then put them in a plastic bag without wringing them out.

Using Lemon to Refresh a Green Salad

Lemon is a great way to preserve and refresh your green salad easily. Just like with white vinegar, all you have to do here is immerse your salad leaves in a bowl of cold water mixed with the juice of half a lemon. Put everything in for 1 hour and your salad will be like new!
