Wondering how to store strawberries? Strawberries are not a berry that you need to store for a long time, the delicious strawberries go quickly. But maybe you need to save them for a special occasion, then you might be wondering how to store fresh strawberries so that they stay fresh for as long as possible. As strawberries have a short shelf life, they can quickly go bad. Read on how to store strawberries.

How To Store Strawberries

Fresh strawberries are strawberries that have not been frozen. They still have the green stem. To store fresh strawberries with the longest shelf life, store them in the refrigerator. You should also not remove the green end of the strawberry when storing it. Keep in mind that strawberries easily get pressure damage. Therefore, you should not store them in a box either, but you should spread them out on a plate or platter so that they do not touch each other. Then you preserve the fine strawberries in the fridge.

Cold strawberries are not as good as room temperature

However, the taste will not be as good as on room-warm strawberries, so you should take the strawberries out of the fridge before eating them in plenty of time so they become room-warm.

Place the strawberries on a plate

When you have bought the strawberries, they last best if you put them in the fridge as quickly as possible. But do not put them in the box, but place them on a plate.

Here’s how to store strawberries

  1. Take out a plate or a dish.
  2. Place a piece of kitchen paper on the plate or dish.
  3. Sort out strawberries that are bad so that moldy strawberries don’t spread and ruin other strawberries.
  4. Place the strawberries on the kitchen paper, making sure the strawberries do not come into contact with each other. Do not pick the strawberries (do not remove the green parts of the strawberries) then the strawberries will last longer.
  5. Place the plate or dish in the refrigerator.

Keep this in mind when storing strawberries

Picked strawberries should be eaten immediately

As soon as you have picked the strawberries, they start to age quickly. Picking off a strawberry means cutting off the green part of the strawberry. If the green part of a strawberry is cut away, the strawberry will not last as long in the fridge, but then it should be eaten at once.

Store in an airy place

Strawberries are sensitive, so they should not be piled up as they can get pressure damage. They should rather be airy. If the strawberries are airy, they don’t get pressure damage and look nicer when they are eaten. If a strawberry gets pressure damage, it can also taste a little off.

Let them come to room temperature before eating them

Take the strawberries out of the fridge about an hour before you are going to eat them. They taste better when they are at room temperature. Cold strawberries are not as good.

Do not rinse them too much

Keep in mind that strawberries absorb moisture very well, moisture is not good for strawberries and makes them go bad faster. Therefore, you should not rinse the strawberries under running water more than necessary before storing them in the refrigerator. If you must rinse them, rinse the strawberries quickly so that water does not penetrate them.

Strawberries for jam etc. do not need to be stored airily

If you are going to use the strawberries for jam, smoothies, or other baked goods where you have to mash or mix in the strawberries, you can store them in a pile. But for a cake or as a decoration on baked goods, it is better to store them one by one so they don’t get pressure damage.

How long do strawberries last?

Swedish strawberries last about 5 days, while imported strawberries can last up to 10-12 days in the refrigerator.

Strawberries last differently depending on where they come from. Nowadays, you not only find Swedish strawberries in the grocery store but also imported strawberries. Swedish strawberries generally have a slightly shorter shelf life than imported strawberries.

Strawberries at room temperature will keep for a few hours to a day. Strawberries quickly become soft and go bad at room temperature.
